The Salem Nutrition Center was founded in 1984 and is a faith-based organization whose goal is to provide nourishing meals, fellowship, support and encouragement to any person in need.  We serve roughly 1200 meals per month in addition to giving out bus passes and distributing clothing and personal hygiene items.

Job Title:     Director, Salem Nutrition Center.

Reports to: The Salem Nutrition Center Board of Directors.

Job summary:  Oversees the day-to-day operation of the kitchen and dining room.  The objective is to have a smooth running kitchen, nutritious meals, harmonious and safe working conditions and satisfied guests and volunteers.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership:

  • Lead efforts to ensure alignment of staff and volunteers with the organization’s mission, vision and values.
  • Foster a creative environment for innovation.
  • Guide process improvement activities.
  • Delegate tasks to other volunteers as needed.

Operations:

  • Open and close the kitchen and dining room
  • Enlist lead volunteers to serve as backups to open and close the kitchen and dining room when a Director is unavailable
  • Insure that an L1 certified person is on premises during operational hours.
  • Oversee food donations, food preparation, cooking stations, serving and cleanup.
  • Oversee operations to ensure that SNC is operating efficiently and follows the guidelines of the Monroe County Health Department.
  • Understand and manage day-to-day business inside the Soup Kitchen.
  • Supervise two paid part-time staff as well as volunteers (not all are present at the same time, or even the same week). Monday volunteer crew is comprised of approx. 35 volunteers from different area churches.  Tuesday volunteer crew is comprised of approx. 21 volunteers.
  • Work with Board Treasurer to develop an annual operating budget and monitor expenses
  • Attend Board of Directors meetings.

Hours: The SNC serves hot meals twice a week, on Mondays and Tuesdays.  The Director, or if Co-Directors then one, is expected to be in the Nutrition Center during food preparation time as well as clean up (9-2:30). 

If there are Co-Directors they should determine the balance of work and time between them equitably.   

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills; high-energy, proactive, self-starting administrator able to work in a high-paced environment.
  • Nonprofit management experience helpful, especially those that may have included soup kitchen and/or food preparation experience.
  • Team player who will be a constructive and collegial partner with the Board of Directors, volunteers, guests and Salem Church members.
  • Understanding and passion for the organization’s mission, empathy and compassion for those living in poverty.
  • Be a good delegator. Our volunteers bring a multitude of skills to the job.  The Director(s) should be able to deploy them as needed to move the operation forward.
