Cordova Community Baptist Church (CCBC) is seeking a pastor who is willing to live in a remote and fairly isolated community in Cordova, Alaska. Cordova is a small town nestled in the beautiful Chugach Mountains at the edge of Prince William Sound in the south central region of the state. The church has its own building and three-bedroom parsonage.
Membership: CCBC is a small active church with an average attendance of around 40. There is a 9:30 service and an 11:00 service, with Sunday School. Attendance fluctuates seasonally with the influx of summer commercial fishing activities. In the recent past there was a Sunday evening service focusing on youth with a band that played contemporary music. We would like to rekindle this special outreach.
Alignments: CCBC is dually aligned with the American Baptist Churches USA and the National Baptist Convention. Presently Alaska has a Regional Minister, Rev. Alonzo Patterson in Anchorage, who serves on the General Board.
Organization: The Board of Deacons is the governing body of the church and the Christian Center, which is an outreach evangelistic arm of the church. In our new organizational plan there will be a Ministries Team selected and led by the pastor.
Programs: The church has a Sunday morning Children’s Church/Sunday School during the 11:00 service. It includes a puppet ministry for the children at the beginning of the adult service. During the year the church and Christian Center sponsor weekly programs for kids and youth as well as a week day preschool for children ages 3-5. VBS is held during the summer. In addition, holiday programs and activities are a usual part of the church calendar. Home Port Coffee Shop is a newly started outreach on Saturday evenings.
Pastoral Expectations: The pastor is expected to preach on Sundays, to guide and lead the church, to support the church family (members and non-members alike), to administer the ordinances (baptism and the Lord’s Supper), to encourage Bible studies, and to help the church carry out its mission in the community. The pastorate will be the minister’s primary job putting in a 40 hour week with a flexible schedule. It will be important for the pastor to embrace all that Cordova has to offer, develop an understanding of a small community and how everyone is connected in one way or another. In our close knit small town a minister needs to be willing to be a part of the community, be visible, and as someone on the committee put it, be a “jack-of-all ministries”.
Music: The music program at the church varies depending on the leadership available and the persons attending church who are interested in music. Currently the pianist plays and leads vocally. We primarily use contemporary music with a mix of hymns.
Compensation: Beginning salary from $30,000 annually, DOE, plus housing and benefits.
