A Collaborative Partnership

Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School (CRCDS) in collaboration with The General Theological Seminary (GTS) in New York City and The Episcopal Diocese of Rochester offers Episcopal students preparing for ordination the opportunity to earn a Master of Divinity degree from CRCDS concurrently with an Anglican Studies Certificate from GTS.

This unique partnership offers students preparing for ministry in the Episcopal Church with the extraordinary opportunity to combine the outstanding ecumenical theological education available at CRCDS with a strong, traditional program in Anglican studies and formation through GTS, the oldest Episcopal seminary in the United States.

Program Overview

The Anglican Studies Certificate consists of six (6) courses taken over the duration of a student’s M.Div. program at CRCDS.  These courses fulfill the canonical requirements for pre-ordination education as stipulated in the Canons of the Episcopal Church USA and fit within the ten (10) electives available to students enrolled in the M.Div. program at CRCDS.  Areas of study will include the following:

• Anglican History and Theology
• History and Theology of the Book of Common Prayer
• Pastoral Liturgy
• Ascetical Theology
• History of the Episcopal Church USA
• Episcopal Polity and Canon Law
• Spiritual Direction and Mysticism
• Anglican Liturgy and Spirituality
• Church Music and Hymnody

The program will also offer opportunities for Anglican formation in the form of daily offices, weekly Eucharist, and ongoing spiritual and theological reflection throughout the student’s course of study.

Limited Residency Requirement at General Theological Seminary

Students enrolling in the certificate program will take some of the courses taught by GTS faculty in New York City, participating remotely, through videoconferencing technology.  Additionally, each student will be required to travel to New York City to take at least one January or June intensive course on-campus at GTS. Other courses will be offered with local Episcopal faculty at CRCDS and faculty from the Eastman School of Music.

Where appropriate, a student may also choose to spend a full semester at GTS in New York City.  Courses taken during this semester-long study will be credited by CRCDS toward the M.Div. degree.

More information about the GTS campus may be found online at www.gts.edu

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the Master of Divinity program at CRCDS and to the Anglican Certificate program requires a completed four-year degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a minimum GPA of 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Episcopal students who are currently enrolled at other institutions for their M.Div. degree may also take courses in the Anglican Studies Certificate program as visiting students if courses are approved by their Chief Academic Officer.

Students who have already completed their theological degree at another institution but who desire the Anglican Studies Certificate may enroll in the program as a non-degree student to fulfill their “Anglican year” as required by their diocese.
